1x1 Rib: How to Do It Step by Step

1x1 Rib is a knitting stitch that makes very stretchy, pulls in widthwise, springs back. Makers reach for it for cuffs, hat brims, necklines, sock tops. It is rated beginner here, so it is a good stitch to learn early and practice on a small swatch before a real project.

1. Cast on an even number of stitches (flat) or any even number (in the round). 2. Row 1: *k1, p1; repeat from * to the end. 3. Following rows: knit the stitches that look like Vs and purl the bumps. 4. Bring the yarn forward before each purl and back before each knit. Work slowly for the first few repeats, keep your tension even, and check the result against the steps before continuing across a whole row or motif.
