22 Count Hardanger: Stitches Per Inch, Design Size and Floss Chart

22 count hardanger has 22 threads per inch, which gives 11 stitches per inch stitched over two. Evenweave and linen are counted by threads, and most patterns place each cross over two threads so it is the same size as a stitch on 11 count Aida. Stitched over one instead, 22 count gives 22 stitches per inch and a design half the size.

Divide the stitch count by 11. A 100 x 100 stitch design finishes at 9.1 x 9.1 inches, a 150 x 200 stitch design at 13.6 x 18.2 inches, and a 200 x 200 stitch design at 18.2 x 18.2 inches. The pattern chart lists its stitch count, usually on the key or cover.

Most patterns use 1 over 1, 2 to 3 over 2 strands of six-strand cotton floss for cross stitches on 22 count hardanger, and 1 for backstitch outlines. Use a size 24 to 28 tapestry needle, which has a blunt tip that slides between threads without splitting them. More strands give fuller coverage; fewer look lighter and more delicate.

It is better as a second or third project. At 11 stitches per inch, and with threads to count rather than blocks, the holes are small and mistakes are harder to spot. Hardanger fabric is woven in paired threads; often stitched over 2 (11 per inch). Pearl cotton 8 and 12 for Hardanger embroidery. Many stitchers start on 14 count Aida and move up.

Work out the design size, then add about 3 inches on every side for framing or finishing. For a 150 x 200 stitch pattern on 22 count, the design is 13.6 x 18.2 inches, so cut fabric at least 20 x 25 inches. Small ornaments and cards can use 2 inches per side.

Not usually. At 11 stitches per inch most people can see the holes clearly in good light. A bright daylight lamp still helps in the evening, and magnification becomes useful if you move to 18 count or finer, or if you stitch for long sessions.
