9.5 x 14 Inch Embroidery Hoop: Design Size, Uses and Machines That Fit

A 9.5 x 14 inch hoop is used for jacket backs, large quilt blocks, multi-part designs without rehooping. It fits 8 of the 8 common design sizes in our table, from small monograms up to jacket back sized designs. Larger designs can be split and rehooped, but alignment takes practice and software that supports it.

A 9.5 x 14 inch hoop is listed as 240 x 360 mm. Manufacturers name hoops by their maximum stitching area rather than the outside size of the frame, so the physical hoop is larger. Hoop names are rounded, which is why a 5 x 7 inch hoop is usually given as 130 x 180 mm.

The embroidery field is the largest area the machine can stitch in one hooping. Hoop size is the stitchable area of a particular hoop. A machine with a 6 x 10 inch field can use its 4 x 4 and 5 x 7 hoops too, but it cannot stitch a 6 x 10 design with a smaller hoop attached. Always compare the design size, hoop and field together.

It is more than enough. A 9.5 x 14 inch field handles almost any home project, and the machines that offer it are usually mid-range to premium. If you are just starting, a 5 x 7 inch machine costs much less and still covers towels, totes and shirt fronts.
