Long and Short Stitch: How to Do It Step by Step

Long and Short Stitch is a hand embroidery stitch that makes blended shading fill; thread painting. Makers reach for it for shading petals, thread painting, animals and realistic motifs. It is rated experienced here, so it helps to be comfortable with the basic stitches first and to practice on a swatch before a project.

1. Outline the shape with split stitch. 2. First row: work stitches over the outline, alternating long and short lengths, following the direction of the shape. 3. Second row: work stitches of equal length, each coming up through the end of a stitch in the row above. 4. Change thread shades row by row to blend color. 5. Continue until the shape is filled, angling stitches to follow curves. Work slowly for the first few repeats, keep your tension even, and check the result against the steps before continuing across a whole row or motif.

The most common problems are: making all first-row stitches the same length, which leaves hard lines; stitches too short for the shape, which looks choppy; ignoring stitch direction. Most are easy to spot if you pause after a few repeats and compare your work with the steps. Good light helps a great deal, especially with dark yarn or thread.
