Stem Stitch: How to Do It Step by Step

Stem Stitch is a hand embroidery stitch that makes twisted rope line; flows around curves. Makers reach for it for stems and vines, curved outlines, lettering. It is rated beginner here, so it is a good stitch to learn early and practice on a small swatch before a real project.

1. Work from left to right along the line. 2. Bring the needle up at the start and insert it a stitch length ahead. 3. Bring the needle up halfway back along that stitch, with the working thread kept below the needle. 4. Insert a stitch length ahead again and repeat, always keeping the thread on the same side. Work slowly for the first few repeats, keep your tension even, and check the result against the steps before continuing across a whole row or motif.

The most common problems are: switching which side the thread is held on, which breaks the twist; stitches too long on tight curves. Most are easy to spot if you pause after a few repeats and compare your work with the steps. Good light helps a great deal, especially with dark yarn or thread.
